The Namib desert, formed 100 million years ago, is believed to be the world’s oldest. It consists largely of stony plains but also includes 13,260 square miles (34,000 km2) of sand dunes, which are the highest on Earth (984 feet, or 300 m). The Namib is also the only place on Earth inhabited by the Welwitschia mirabilis plant, specimens of which are as old as 1,500 years. The fragile balance of this arid ecosystem is preserved in part by two national parks, which occupy a total of 26,000 square miles (66,400 km2), one-fourth the total area of the Namib.
