Art photography by Yann ARTHUS-BERTRAND of the Athi River in Kenya that runs down the high mountains at the centre of the country. Its water has forcefully shaped its bed and when it dries up, like here in the Tsavo National Park, the herds led by nomadic people drink in watering holes where there is some of the precious liquid left.

The Athi River is the second longest watercourse in Kenya. It runs down the high mountains at the centre of the country. Its water has forcefully shaped its bed and when it dries up, like here in the Tsavo National Park, the herds led by nomadic people drink in watering holes where there is some of the precious liquid left. The exploitation and pollution of the Athi River in the capital Nairobi and the irrigated agricultural regions on the flatbeds it runs through - as well as frequent and dreadful droughts - explain this seasonal drying up. The Tsavo National Park is one of the largest in the world. Large herds of elephants, hippopotamuses and rhinoceroses amongst others can be found there. It is made up of savannahs, bushes, lakes, rocky outcrops, old lava flows and semi-desert landscapes: the richness of the wildlife and of the landscapes is one of the country's main resources. It encourages nature tourism and is an important source of revenue.
